January Jones' pregnancy into the new season -- or didn't -- probably didn't
expect Matt Weiner and company's creative excuse for her weight gain. They
didn't have the former Betty Draper pregnant, but rather experiencing an
unexpected weight gain. The root cause? A tumor on her thyroid.
Luckily, the tumor was benign so she can slim back down -- after having that
baby in real life -- and the show can move forward with its current drama,
minus whatever added elements a baby for the remarried Betty would have
caused. But a heavier Betty is a less confident, less cocky and less icy
Betty, and that could be a pleasant change for fans, according to E! Online.
Past Magazine was glad the writers didn't use the "classic" television device
of positioning Jones behind lamps or having her carry grocery bags and
oversized purses all the time.
