Crib Bedding: Tips for Shopping by Katie Wilber
Shopping for a new baby is quite exciting. Expectant parents have fun decorating their baby's new home with lots of color. Some parents choose a basic theme that runs through everything they buy for the nursery including the bedding for the crib.
The basics of any crib bedding are pretty similar to adult beds. You will need a crib sheet and a blanket. Make sure to get a sheet that fits the size of the mattress you purchased. Most crib mattresses are produced in a standard size these days, but that doesn't mean that every crib sheet is created equal. It is absolutely necessary that the crib sheet fits the mattress very snug so that your newborn can't pull it out from under the mattress. Just make sure to test the sheets out on the mattress long before you bring your newborn home.
Most parents wash the same crib sheets over and over because it matches the dcor of the nursery. Save yourself some trouble and purchase a few extra crib sheets in the pattern of your choice.
It's also very important to buy sheets and blankets that will not cause irritation to a newborn's skin. A tried and true way to go is with cotton. Purchase light blankets at first, so as to not weigh down your newborn. The blanket should be tucked in around the mattress so a newborn cannot pull it up over its head.
After taking safety into account, it's time to let your creative dreams go wild. Do you want to go with solid colors or patterns? Should you go with gender neutral colors or traditional boy and girl colors? There really is no right or wrong answers to these questions. However, when deciding on the actual color, ask yourself if you plan on having another baby some day. If you're having a girl and decorate the room in pink, you may have to purchase all new bedding and accessories if you end up having a boy in a few years.
When you shop for bedding for baby's crib you'll find crib sheet separates as well as matching sets. Matching sets provide you with more than just the sheet for the bed. Included are dust ruffles, baby blanket, crib bumpers and the sheet for the mattress.
Outfitting an entire nursery can be hard to do. You may find yourself going from store to store in an effort to match pieces accessories to create your theme. Expectant parents can save time on this front by choosing a manufacturer for their baby bedding that also makes other nursery items in matching patterns. When you have a pattern in mind you can find lamps, mobiles, hampers, changing table pad covers, crib accessory bags, curtains and possibly even bedding for a cradle if you are extremely lucky.
Bringing home the new arrival can be both scary and exciting. Reduce the stress by doing something fun like shopping for the nursery. Think safety first when choosing crib bedding and other accessories for the nursery. Beyond that, let your imagination run wild as you go about designing the room that your newborn will spend many nights in.

Baby shower necessities?
I am 30 weeks pregnant with my first child. I am single (the sperm donor abandoned me at 14 weeks). I work full time, but I still live paycheck to paycheck, and things are tight. My baby shower is in a few weeks, and I'm trying to put together a "wish list". What are absolute necessities? I don't want things I don't need (wipe warmer, mobiles, etc.). Any ideas?
Note: Because I rent, and I only have one room (my bedroom), there is no room for a crib or bassinet, so sheets/crib accessories are pointless. There is also no room for a changing table.
The baby will have to sleep with me.....I just can't afford to move. I wish I could.
Car seat and stroller if you dont already have one, bottles, diapers& wipes. You could even say basic clothes, like t-shirts and socks.
Hope this helps
