What is wrong with a boy wearing an apron?
Last week one of my daughters was asked to mind a 12y/o boy. Being a Tuesday (our baking day) we spent most of the day in the kitchen, which was where we were when the child was dropped off. I asked if he would like to help, he said "yes". As both of us had our aprons on, I put one of my daughters aprons on him so he could help without getting too messy. He was quiet happy mixing and molding, helping wash up etc. When his mother came back we were still cleaning up and we were still in our aprons. His mother came into the kitchen to see her son and was apparently shocked to see him wearing an apron! She berated us about making her son wear a girls feminine apron and said we were confusing him about gender identity. She ripped of his apron and basically threw it at us and stormed out. We just stood and looked at each other for about 2 minuets without saying anything. Did we do anything wrong?
No. You were trying to keep the boy from getting dirty,so you put an apron on him. There's nothing wrong with that. Honestly he's not going to remember wearing the apron. If he does, he's not going to associate it with anything. He IS going to remember having a good time baking with you all. He knows he's a boy. He will gravitate towards certain things with or without his mother's help. He doesn't need someone teaching him what it means to be a boy. Wearing an apron doesn't make him less of a boy anyway. Exposing him to everything in life makes him a more secure adult who will be a better adjusted and more successful in life. Exposing him to everything in life makes him more of a better husband, father, brother, friend and etc. (When I say expose him to everything, I don't mean everything. I mean different activities, like different sports, music, subjects, toys, and etc. I mean crossing the stereotypical gender lines). If you push a kid too much with things like that it's going to back fire and screw him up and possibly screw his relationship with his family/women. It boggles my mind that this day and age his mother acted that way. It's kind of creepy also.
Addition: People become over occupied with things, like the gender identity situation, when something has gone wrong in their lives. I would assume that the woman either has gender identity issues herself or has a husband/father/brother with gender identity issues. So either way the issue is with her, not you.
