The Impact of Hall Runners on a House. by Gareth Hoyle1
I have been looking at buying a new house recently, and consequently we have been looking at a lot of homes. These homes are very different from each other, and looking at all these variations of styles has given me a lot of ideas about what looks good in a house. The front door and entrance to a home gives the first impression which is all important and I can usually tell what the rest of the house will be like when I walk through the door. A hall runner in the hallway really adds tone to a house, and when I see an entrance way enhanced with a hall runner I know that the rest of the house will be cared for and tastefully decorated.
Some houses I have looked at have tiled hallways. These always look smart if the tiles are in good condition but they get a lot of wear and tear, and many of them are quite old. Minton tiles are Victorian and Edwardian and are of a distinctive design which can be enhanced by a hall runner which can pick up the colour of the tiles, in particular they look good if you use a colour to augment the small inset tiles which are often a particularly pleasing shade of blue. Especially if you have these antique tiles, it is a good idea to protect them with a hall runner.
I saw a lovely hallway in wood block which had a rich red toned hall runner which really made the best of the golden tones in the wood. The walls were painted in a neutral colour to set off the hues of the wood and the red shades of the hall runner made it the focal point of the entrance. In contrast, another house I looked at had a similar shade in laminate, but without any protection the flooring had been damaged by high heels and had numerous indentations made by shoes. These could have been covered up by a hall runner but it would have been much easier to put one down as protection in the first place. Without the defence of a hall runner this sort of damage is inevitable and it doesn’t give the right impact on the prospective buyer in these days of competitive house markets.
I have also seen a hall runner used to great effect on an upstairs landing. This was in the same house which had the red runner in the hall downstairs and the theme had been carried on upstairs with a matching runner, giving a cohesive feel to the hallways. In this case, red with a simple toning pattern worked well. This house was an older semi detached property but I also saw a hall runner used on an upstairs landing in a house which was almost brand new. This had a bold pattern over white painted wooden flooring and really gave the upstairs area a modern upbeat feel between the bedrooms. I was really impressed with the use of hall runners I saw on my house hunting.
