I am writting a story and it includes a young girl named Madeline. She has a twin brother named Michael, and then a baby sister named Marie. I was wondering what season was the most work going on for a young girl with the help of her mother.I am making the story where she is staying home for about two weeks, and is home from school,and is constantly helping her mother for all the chores. What were some chores they did.She is about 7,or around that age group.
Late summer would be the busiest season, when the fruits and vegetables all had to be "put up" or there wouldn't be any to eat all winter.
A seven year old girl could string stringbeans onto a thread for drying, wipe off potatoes and carrots for the root cellar, work the churn to make butter, turn and wipe cheeses so they would form a proper rind, grind pepper and other spices to season whatever pickles her mother was making. Small children's fingers are best for shelling peas, opening mustard seed pods, etc.
