Where To Find The Right Halloween Costume by Sue Krippner
Some say the best part of Halloween is the candy, but others would argue its dressing up in a Halloween Costume!
Whether you buy a costume or make one, these ideas are sure to be a hit. From witches to firefighters, here are some fun and easy Halloween costume ideas and tips.
Fairies and Princesses:
This category of Halloween costume ideas is fairly easy to pull off as fairy and princess costumes essentially look the same plus or minus a few minor details. You have two options here, you can either purchase a premade fairy gown or dress, then accessorize accordingly, or you can choose to customize every detail of your costume by putting one together yourself.
Believe it or not best place to start building costumes like these are at your local thrift store. Thrift stores are usually filled with old sparkly, sequence tops, jackets, or shawls that can easily be converted into a dress or skirt with a little sewing.
Next check out the shoes section for cheap white or cream pumps if you don't have a pair already. And finally, be sure to look around the jewelry section for glitzy buys. An old broach can be used as a topper to a magic wand, or you may even find some perfectly gaudy princess jewelry to layer on.
Soldiers, Firefighters (casual), and Cops:
The military, firefighter, and law enforcement category is always a lot of fun and Very Easy to put together.
The one thing in common for all these costumes is the jumpsuit. The bolder the better when it comes to the color of your jumpsuit. Use army patterns for soldiers, navy blue for firefighters, and black for policemen (or women).
Then it's just a matter of sewing on patches that are relevant to each profession. You can order patches online or visit your local seasonal Halloween Costume store. Throw on a pair of boots from the thrift store and you're ready to go.
For women a tight ponytail, a pair of inexpensive aviator sunglasses, and plus or minus a few small details can transform you from cop to soldier, or even from firefighter to helicopter pilot. The sky's the limit!
Witches, Vampires, and Counts:
For a truly spooky Halloween consider dressing as a witch, vamp, or count.
Like the military/cop category, these costumes are essentially interchangeable plus or minus some accessories like vampire teeth. For this category again a thrift store would be a great place to start.
Look for long black dresses, dark red skirts and tops, and lots of lace and ruffles. For men a simple black collar shirt and black slacks will work just fine.
It's the make up that creates the female vamps with the dark eye shadow, black lipstick, fangs and blood red nail polish. For men, a slicked back hair style plus fangs (and maybe some drops of faux blood around the mouth) will pull off this costume nicely.
For witches you can choose to purchase green face make up and finish with some boils and faux scrapes. The final touch of the broom stick and hat can be purchased at a craft or Halloween retailer.
