I'm writing a story which I hope to get published but I have a few questions...
Can words like 'Calvin Klein' or 'Cover Girl' or 'Red Baron' pizza orother famous, perhaps trademark names be used without authorization?
Like can I say, "She wore a pink Calvin Klein blouse."?
Would Klein get royalites from that?
Or like if I mention a famous person. Is it illegal to mention the name Jon Bon Jovi in my story?
Like - "The band Bon Jovi is my favorite. He's so cute!"
So, is mentioning Shakira or Domenico Vacca okay or not?
Must I ask to use a someone's name or business?
If I can use it use it, will they sue me if I say something negative about them in the story?
I just want to know about te red tape. Thanks...
(PS - these are not lines in my story - they stink and I can do much better than that...)
I suggest you go to the library or a bookstore and pick of one of the many books available on writing / publishing. You'll be able to find out exactly what the rules of the trade are. At the moment though, why not just write your story and worry about the legalities with the publisher later.
