Is it possible to insert a zipper into an already made cotton/spandex-blend knit dress?
I've got a form-fitting knit dress and I would like to add a long zipper down the back. If I cut the back open and sewed a zipper in, would the dress be functional or just a huge mess?
It can be done as an exposed zipper application, but not as a lapped or invisible zipper. You'll also need to fuse the zipper placket area with interfacing before you begin -- in fact, I'd fuse in the strip of interfacing, then cut the new zipper site. Spandex/lycra/elastane is heat sensitive, so you'll want to use a low temperature fusible.
The easiest zjpper application after the fact would be the style where the entire zipper tape is exposed, and simply topstitched in. Install the zipper, unzip it, and then cut the dress.
All this assumes that you've had some practice with inserting zippers in knits -- it can be a tricky business, particularly if you don't have good fabric handling skills.
