Help sewing a mens vest?
I have a Simplicity pattern but I'm a relatively new seamstress. Any advice? Will this be crazy-difficult? And what are the point of notches??
Adding to the other good information given, the vest will need at least a 2" wide strip of interfacing fused all around the outside edges. Some (most?) commercial patterns won't tell you this. Personally, I'd fuse the entire front of the vest and a 2" wide strip at the back neck and back armscye. If the pattern doesn't give you pattern pieces for this, you can make them yourself by tracing off the back pattern piece, and removing everything except the 2" strip.
Notches are "sew me to me" marks. I don't use notches as they appear on commercial patterns... the triangles are too big to match with any accuracy. I do use tiny clips into the fabric from the middle of the pattern company's notch to its tip. If you think you're going to visually lose that little clip, mark it again with a bit of chalk.
When you get a little experience under your belt, you'll find you can Sew Patterns that have been thoughtfully notched together using ONLY the notches to tell you what to do.
