Fashion Job Interview--Is showing my sense of style really okay?
I have an interview next week with a major fashion company and many websites say that if you're going to work in fashion it's okay to be less conservative and show your sense of style.
I know it's fashion but does it depend more on your actual position than the company? My position is more analytical than creative.
This company has a casual dress policy (jeans everyday are okay) and I still plan on wearing a dark suit but I'm not sure if I should go with:
A) a completely traditional look (white shirt with regular leather heels)
OR
B) something a bit more outgoing (colored or patterned blouse with patent leather flats).
I'm leaning towards being less conservative because it's closer to my personal style and I'd feel more comfortable.
I'm not in dire need of help here but I'd like other opinions.
I think that you should be able to get hired either way if you have good qualification. But you're more likely to appeal to the fashion firm as a candidate if you share their sense of style.
You can use a conservative suit as a base, and then accessorize according to your style. That way you're mixing appropriate interview attire with something else to catch their eye. You mention a blouse and flats -- that sounds fine.
But don't forget that you can also accessorize w/ jewelry (like a fun necklace) and a bag. Definitely pick a trendy handbag or totebag to carry to the interview. As good as you look, the bag can ruin the trend if you don't coordinate the look.
You could also try something different like printing your resume on shaded paper (like light lavender or green). Just a thought to make you stand out...
