Knitting directions: What do these numbers mean at the end of the rows?
I'm a beginner knitter trying to knit the scarf here:

The pattern is:

My question is, what does (255 sts), (509 sts), and (1017 sts) mean? I originally guessed that they were just indicators of the cumulative number of stitches you'd knitted up to that point, but the math doesn't work out. And why are these numbers important?
*Note: circular needle is used

Those numbers indicate how many stitches you will have on that row once you have added the new yarnovers (doubled stitches with a lacy hole between ) to your previous row count. Its nice to keep track so you can forestall mistakes. You may want to begin adding markers to indicate certain points so you can easily count the stitches (in tens, or twenties, for example).
