Have you ever found that lead guitarists have a certain look? As do graphic designers, investment bankers, construction workers and writers. Of course some jobs require their employees to dress a certain way, after all it would be strange if an investment banker showed up to work in leather trousers and biker boots. But it's more than just the work uniform. People from the same industries have a similar Saturday and Sunday look as well. A few examples are:
1. The lead guitarist:
a. By week: a dirty pair of jeans, flannel top and probably a Mohawk or long hair. Or leather trousers, a graphic t-shirt and their favourite old biker jacket.
b. By weekend: same as above.
2. The investment banker:
a. By week: suit, polished loafers, and a bold pair of cufflinks.
b. By weekend: freshly pressed jeans, a designer sweater with the collar of a dress shirt coming out and an expensive pair of trainers, that no one other than investment bankers consider trainers.
3. The graphic designer:
a. By week: skinny jeans, Converse running shoes, a plain or graphic tee, and a trendy cardigan.
b. By weekend: same as above.
4. The construction worker:
a. By week: baggy, dirty jeans, a dirty t-shirt, a pullover, and big construction boots.
b. By weekend: clean baggy jeans, a clean t-shirt, a pullover, and boots or trainers.
5. The writer:
a. By week: (if published) a dated pair of trousers, a dress shirt and a tweed blazer (possibly a pipe). (If unpublished) dirty jeans/sweatpants, a dirty t-shirt, and unkept hair.
b. By weekend: same as above.
6. The lawyer:
a. By week: suit/jeans with a sports jacket.
b. By weekend: jeans with a sports jacket/ chords and a sweater.
7. The athlete:
a. By week: athletic gear/ workout gear
b. By weekend: (when at home) sweatpants, jumper, comfy socks. (When out at night) suit, expensive jewellery, polished, black shoes.
8. The teacher:
a. By week: chords, dated sweater/dated jacket
b. By weekend: jeans that are too short, out of date runners, t-shirt tucked in.
Of course not every member of all of these industries dresses this way, after all there are exceptions to every rule. But it is still interesting to see how the idea of comfort differs between an investment banker and a guitar player. Many of the professions mentioned above don't require its employees to dress a specific way during the week. How would members of those that do, dress for work if given that freedom I wonder?
