It could have been the fact that Tina Turner wore them with hot pants while performing Proud Mary on a 1970s episode of Soul Trail or it could be that athletes like Julius Erving of the New York Nets and Walt Frazier of the New York Knicks wore them in every single basketball game they played, but whatever the reason, tube socks with stripes around the top are just plain cool.
They are Retro Cool, yes, with capital letters. Tube socks have been worn for 30 years or so and have remained classic. They look good and they inspire nostalgia, while other things from the past 30 years, notably aging rock stars who continue to tour even though they have no new material (think, Jethro Tull or Poison) cannot be described, in any way, as cool. Fashion has a way of transcending age and time to rebound like good art or movies.
Retro fashion is defined as a style of clothing that was commonly worn in the past. Pipe leg jeans, leather jackets, thick black framed glasses can all be described as Retro Fashion. They have come back, fallen out of fashion and come back again. Take note of any collection from high end designers and you will see that they recycle styles and trends. Recycling is possible if the original piece was something that is going to look good decade after decade such as Audrey Hepburn's black dress in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" or her black pants or actually anything that Audrey Hepburn wore. Be it the dress or the person wearing it, the look remains classic for some reason. Let enough time pass and it becomes "retro."
It helps when you have celebrities wearing them, then and now. Tube socks with stripes around the top were pretty common 40, 30, 20 years ago. Remember Spike Lee in trailers for "She's Got to Have It," (1986) hawking tube socks on the streets to Brooklyn to raise money for his movie. Linda Ronstadt sports them on the cover of her album, "Living in the USA." She combined tube socks with roller skates and hoop earrings. It's no wonder that combination is so retro cool today. Today's celebrities such as Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Miley Cyrus and Russell Brand (!) have been spotted and photographed in retro tube socks.
However some things never become retro fasion like short basketball shorts which for some reason never came back into style. Instead basketball players for the past 15 or so years have insisted on wearing baggy shorts down to their knees. The idea of tight short shorts, such as the ones worn in the 70's seem comical, not stylish. They are lampooned in movies with Will Farrell. Some garments can made the leap from old fashion to stylish and others can not.

I really like these shoes in womans size but is it weird to get them now? their retro and I don't know if they have womans or you would just where the mens size in smaller.
