How do I turn a pattern for scoop neck into mock turtleneck?
I need to take a pattern for a scoop neck dress so it has a mock turtleneck instead for a costume. I'm cosplaying as SunSun from Bleach and found the perfect pattern with an old 60's dress pattern but it needs to have a higher neckline. How would I go about doing this so the pattern still matches up?
The simplest way is to use the pattern just as it is and add an insert that has a mock turtleneck. You can knit or sew or crochet the insert--there are patterns available (probably called a "dickey") on the Internet.
Or, depending on the pattern and your pattern-drafting skill, you may be able to raise the neckline of the bodice to curve to about 2" lower than the shoulder line, then cut a bias piece about 6" that will fit the stitch line for the neckline. Stitch one side of the bias along the seam line, right sides together, in a 5/8" seam, trim it to 1/4". Next, fold the seam line under on the opposite side of the bias, fold the bias piece right sides together, matching the seam lines, and stitch the ends to coincide with the back opening. Finally, turn the free side of the bias in and stitch the seamline over the seam (to enclose the seam) and either stitch it by hand or machine-stitch it from the outside in the "ditch" so the stitching is not noticeable.
