When homeschooling my girls, one of the lessons I wanted them to learn was how to sew. They learned to stitch a button on a a piece of cloth, hand stitch a hem, and the primary functions of a sewing machine. We hunted for doll clothes tips and patterns and they made their own clothing. They graduated from simple skirts and jumpers to more complex outfits. They received praise from their friends and their confidence grew. One Day, while playing dress up with their dolls, they started looking at all the scraps of material and decided to start making custom doll clothes for Dolly as well. There were unique challenges learning how to sew on a smaller scale, but with practice they became more self -assured and they discovered differences in making seams as well.
The first lesson to learn when making dcoll clothes is that you are sewing on a tinier scale. This is a bit more challenging than full-Size Patterns and it will require you to make some basic changes in your sewing techniques. Because Dolly has a larger head and shorter neck, every pattern and method will be adjusted to accommodate these differences.
Here are a few other keys to remember as you begin selecting your patterns:
Little hands will dress Dolly sochoose closures suitable for them to be able to close and unclose without frustration. Select fabric for Dolly's clothing that is lightweight and non-bulky. Not all sewing techniques can accomodate a sewing machine so adjust how each piece is put together. Sewing for dolls is so much fun and will challenge you as a seamstress. Learn new methods and adjust current ones for the smaller doll size.
The first sewing doll clothes tip is learning about sewing seams. Each doll pattern has a 1/4" seam allowance. Using a larger seam allowance will make the outfit too small. If you have a 1/4" presser foot, use it! If not, use this easy trick to mark your sewing machine for when you sew seams on Dolly's clothes. To make sure that you have your seam allowance marked right cut out 3 pieces of fabric 1 1/2" wide and 3" long. Next, sew each piece together lengthwise, so they line up side by side. Smooth the seam allowance in to the seam and measure how wide the inside piece is. It should be exactly 1". If it is less, the seam allowance is too wide. It if is less, you need to make it wider. Now that you've found your placement, take blue painter's tape and mark the 1/4" seam allowance on the throat plate of your sewing machine. Now that your seam allowance is marked, remember to backstitch your seams no more than 2 stitches each way. Doing so will add bulk to the small outfit. When stitching using your machine, start in at least 1/4". This prevents yourmaterial from being gobbled up into the bobbin area. Sewing doll clothing is an exciting hobby whether you are just starting out or if you grew up making Your Own clothing. As you sew through each pattern, remember that there are many skills yet to master and you will always be encouraged to continue sewing and pass on what you know to the coming generation.
