but if thats the case why does it snow in the arctic and antarctic, its very cold there....
ok, so why have I seen pictures of very cold places like Alaska, Siberia, Greenland, Arctic, Antarctic, Russia etc etc, with blizzards and snow??
Snow requires a warm moisture source to lie above a cooler pocket of air. It is the temperature differential that creates the humidity effect necessary for it to snow. For example:
Here in PA, it snowed yesterday. The upper-level winds brought in warm moisture from the ocean. This moisture increased the relative humidity in the upper air to the point where it could not be held as condensate. As the condensate turned into precipitation, it fell through a layer of cold air and froze into the tiny ice particles that we call snow.
The arctic regions you've mentioned, for the most part, do not have any of this temperature differential. The "snow" that forms in these regions is simply frozen water that is blown by high winds. In the Antarctic especially, the water spray from the ocean breaking along the ice shelf and coastline freezes almost instantly and then is blown on-shore.
