Help with sewing my Star Trek costume?
I ordered a pattern (found here: http://www.roddenberry.com/wardrobe/patterns/tos-starfleet-officer-duty-uniform-female-skant.html ) but the instructions are very confusing. Does anyone know somewhere that has a video/pictures to help with sewing this costume? Any help appreciated!!
No vid or pics found, sorry. I have a pattern for the same dress (not sure if it's the same exact pattern you've got, but it probably is). Yes, the directions are rather simplistic.
First, piece together the patterns for the sleeve sections A and E as both of these run off the page. Make sure the two pieces have the same length sleeve since the pattern doesn't look identical to me.
The directions have you starting at the left sleeve A and sewing all the way around until you sew the back of the left sleeve H to A. You could also make it in two halves, putting together ABCD and EFGH, then sewing front to back at the side seams.
They have you joining left sleeve A to bottom front section B only to the large jutting section that will become the facing for the flap. Same on the reverse with right sleeve E to bottom back section F. E and F also have a zipper (follow zipper instructions: essentially sew the zipper face down with the right side of the fabric facing up to one half of the garment. If working on piece E for example, sew the left edge of the facedown zipper to the edge of the face up fabric. I usually turn the zipper to the inside at this point and sew it to the other half of the garment from the inside. I've sewn too many zippers with one side correct and the other inverted!). They then want you to cut a slit following the pattern on piece F to accommodate the rest of the zipper.
As to fabric selection, my pattern says they used a cotton jersey knit - essentially T-shit material. I'd suggest a stretch velvet with a 4-way stretch (up and down as well as side to side). I would use a serger, but if one is not available I'd use a very narrow zig-zag so the material can still stretch. Be aware that because pieces B and C and F and G are cut at an angle (called the bias) that they will have a tendency to stretch no matter what fabric you use, so that is why they suggest matching notches carefully.
Cut two of the collars from black fabric. I'd use a piece of craft-weight fusible interfacing to stiffen the collar rather than buckram. If you want your collar really stiff, I'd fuse a piece of the interfacing to each collar section on the wrong side.
Not sure what other guidance you might need. Since fabric is so expensive, perhaps make a fitting version using a large t-shirt or other inexpensive stretch fabric. That way you can make adjustments to the fit for your body frame and transfer those adjustments to the final piece.
