The Introduction of Silk Screen Printing

This printing technique is called silk screening. Silk screening is a process of transmitting ink or other forms of printing medium through a screen that has been extended on to a frame. The technique was first recognized in China during the Song Dynasty (960 A.D – 1,279 A.D) and was later on adapted and improved by the Japanese in the 15th and 16th centuries. They (Japanese) used silk to create the screen and came to be known as silk screening. They were commonly used for clothing and decorative purposes. The process was then introduced as “screen printing” in Western Europe from Asia in 1700’s and gained global popularity when silk mesh was introduced. This is where the term “silk screen printing” started.
Early Pioneers of Silk Screen Printing
Despite the fact that silk screening or silk printing has been around for years now, it was only in 1907 when the modern process of screen printing was officially introduced. This is when Samuel Simon of Manchester, England took the first industrial patency of screen printing.
In 1914, John Pilsworth from San Francisco patented multi-colored screen printing using the same or single screen. This technique is termed as the Selectasine technique and is widely used for printing large quantities. It became widely known in America during World War I and was commonly used in printing flags and advertising banners. This gave way for screen printing to be utilized for commercial purposes.
Another then popular artist in America, Andy Warhol, popularized Pilsworth’s style of printing. One of his most popular prints is Marilyn Monroe’s portrait. In 1960, Michael Vasilantone, also an American artist, invented and introduced the first screen printing machine. He also filed for a patent in 1967 for his invention and the machine he developed was capable of printing logos and team information on bowling garments. Those timeline in the history are the reasons why the screen printing we know today was credited to the English and American artists.
