Why are women's Halloween costumes often based on the Dirndl (German/Bavarian historical costume)?
A lot of the mass-produced women's Halloween costumes today are now basically fetish/sexy versions of the Dirndl, modified to be a witch, pirate, beer girl, Alice, Snow White, maids, etc. Why? When did that start? Why is the Dirndl considered the epitome of sexiness, and how did its design come to be frequently incorporated into these packaged Halloween costumes?
My guess is that it's a pretty universally flattering design. Also, I think a lot of the Girl Costumes you named actually wore a dirndl.
