How should a 40 year old woman dress?
I am 40+ and I think I dress more like a woman in her 20's. I wear Victoria's Secret (Pink), Abercrombie, Hollister and Aeropostle. Are these more for the younger generation? I mean, I do wear things that "cover" and I am not busting out all over the place. I wear a size 6 jeans, if that helps.
If this is not for me, then what should I really be wearing? Send some pictures of outfits if you can. Thanks
I don't think the stores you shop at matter as much as how your clothes fit and what you're buying. A 40-year-old woman usually can't pull off the same clothes, fit-wise, as an 18-year-old. Maybe you're in fantastic shape and can, I don't know.
Since I don't know what you're wearing or what you look like, I can only share my own experience. The older I get, the less I want to wear super-low jeans, tight tops with silly screenprints, little-girl dresses, sweats, etc. I'm a professional woman and I want to be taken seriously, so I try to reflect that in how I dress. I shop a lot at The Limited, Banana Republic, J. Crew, and Gap for things that transition from workday to evening. I think their jeans are more tailored and their shirts/dresses are cute in a way that suits an adult body better, but they still look fashionable, and they carry clothes that I can wear in my business-casual office. I liked the stores you listed when I was younger (and I still buy Pink bras and underwear, they're so comfy), but I don't find clothes in there anymore that suit my lifestyle. That doesn't mean, though, that they don't carry clothes appropriate for your lifestyle.
I guess the thing you have to consider is what message you want to send with your clothes, and then take a good look in the mirror and decide what message you're actually sending. If you're happy with how you look and it's appropriate for your work/life, then I don't see a problem.
